We all know that self-care is essential for nurturing our mind, bodies and spirit. But what if, like me, you are an art lover - and I presume you are if you are reading this - and you are also drawn to the spiritual side of life and maybe a bit of witchy, perhaps? Then having a spiritual art practice becomes a deeply creative and magical activity for anyone drawn to this kind of art therapy.
Incorporating art, any kind of art, whether it’s simple finger painting to creating a masterpiece like the Sistine Chapel; a self-care, art therapy practice can help to channel your energy in meaningful and expressive ways.
Want to know how you can do this? I got you!
Here are 10 ideas to inspire a spiritual (and magical) self-care routine that not only feeds your soul, but sparks your creativity no end.
Create an Intuitive Sketchbook.
Spend some time picking out a sketchbook that calls to you. Consider getting one that has good quality paper that can handle paint, water and ink. You’d be surprised how a journal that ‘feels’ special to you can help you to connect with your inner artist. Here’s an example of a great art sketchbook/ journal.

Grab your watercolours, paints, inks, crayons, scraps of paper, printouts, material, washi tape or simply a HB pencil and create whatever comes to mind to visually express your inner world. Let your intuition guide you—don’t overthink, just create. Sometimes you make an interesting mess, others times you’ll create something simply wonderful.
Paint Sigils for Empowerment
Sigils are symbols with intention. Painting or drawing them can be a meditative and empowering practice. Focus on an area where you feel you need additional strength or healing (e.g., confidence, peace, protection) and design a sigil that represents your desire. Go wild, create the sigil using any of the styles you discovered while experimenting in your sketchbook.
Do this in your sketchbook, or on a separate sheet of paper so you can display your sigil in a sacred space or perhaps, do a small version to carry it with you.

Illustrate Your Affirmations
Write down positive affirmations like, “I am strong and resilient” or “I am good enough.” Decorate them with spiritual symbols, such as moons, stars or perhaps dry and press some flowers to create a natural collage. Display your affirmations in your space as a daily reminders of your power.
Craft a Vision Board with a Magical Twist
Create a vision board inspired by witchy aesthetics. Include inspiring images, meaningful quotes, and personal artwork that aligns with your goals. Set your intention by lighting a candle or surrounding yourself with crystals while doing your art. A perfect art therapy session to help towards focusing the mind towards manifesting your desires.

Use Watercolor Painting for Emotional Release
Watercolour painting is a fluid and intuitive medium perfect for expressing your emotions. Focus on your feelings and let them guide your paintbrush. As with your intuitive sketckbook, don’t overthink it; just let the pain flow. Use spiritual colours like deep purples, blues, silvers, or greens to evoke a feeling of grounding and renewal.
Design Your Own Oracle or Tarot Cards
Create a custom deck of oracle or tarot cards with themes that resonate with you. Each card can reflect a symbol or sigil that resonates with you, a personal experience, or an artistic vision. Just cut out pieces of card and get creative. Later you can seal them with a layer of sellotape to protect the art and use them in the same way you would a purchased deck.
Decorate a Self-Care Altar
Set up a sacred space dedicated to self-care and your art therapy. Add your artwork, candles, crystals, and any items that inspire you. Use this space for meditation, journaling, or simply to enjoy moments of stillness.
Make a Decorated Spell Jar
Decorate a spell jar with painted symbols, glue on charms or sequins, or simply create patterns using colourful wax. Fill with herbs, crystals, or other items that represent your desire (e.g., confidence, love, protection) then write your intention on a piece of paper and place inside the jar. Your spell jar now becomes a magical tool as well as a piece of art.

Create Mandalas for Meditation and Balance
Drawing or painting mandalas can help you feel centered and balanced. Use colours, shapes, and patterns that reflect your current emotions or goals. Mandalas serve as beautiful reminders of your inner strength.

Channel Emotions into Abstract Art
Let your emotions flow onto the canvas through abstract art. Use colours, textures, and movement to express your feelings authentically. My favourite technique is textured art, using a plaster mix of ready made filler, plaster of Paris and wood glue; mix well, then throw down onto a piece of MDF. Get your hands dirty. Just move the plaster mix across the wood making shapes and texture, then leave to dry. Once dry, just go wild with the paint, spiritual or witchy elements, or simply paint white, seal and hang, pride of place in your sacred space.
Combining art with self-care is a powerful way to nurture your spirit and creativity. These practices aren’t about perfection, because, after all—perfection doesn’t exist—they’re about creating space to heal, grow, and express your authentic self. Your creativity is a form of magic, and through it, you can empower every aspect of your life.
So tell me, which of these practices will you try first? Let your intuition guide you!
